Ha Giang Loop Border Permit 2026
Check the official cost, documents, processing time and current rules for foreign travelers visiting Lung Cu, Dong Van and Ha Giang’s land-border areas.
Quick answer
Most foreign Loop travelers should have the permit checked before departure
A border-area permit is required when a foreign visitor enters a designated land-border area that is not covered by an applicable tourism, service or economic-zone exception. The standard Ha Giang Loop reaches communes close to the China border, especially around the Dong Van Karst Plateau, so travelers should not assume that a Vietnam visa alone is enough.
This is actively enforced locally. In June 2026, Tuyen Quang Provincial Police reported issuing 4,458 border-area permits to foreign tourists in 12 days, with checks focused on 17 border communes and the Dong Van Karst Plateau.
The practical answer is simple: send your exact route to your tour operator before travel. They should confirm whether a permit is required, who will submit the application and whether the official fee is included in your quote.
Important 2025-2026 update
Why older border-permit articles may now be misleading
Decree 299/2025/ND-CP amended Vietnam’s land-border rules with effect from 17 November 2025. The updated text says foreign residents entering land-border areas need provincial police permission, except for tourism areas, service areas and economic zones, while also requiring a passport or international travel document and valid residence-related documents.
That exception does not mean every road promoted online is automatically permit-free. Current local police information from May and June 2026 still tells foreigners and tourism businesses to comply with the permit process and confirms permits are being issued to visitors entering the Ha Giang border region.
- Do not rely on a blog written before November 2025 without checking for an update.
- Do not decide from the name of an attraction alone; the exact commune and route matter.
- Do not treat a tourism-zone exception as permission to enter a border belt or restricted zone.
- Current police, border-guard signs and official instructions always take priority.

Official process
How to get a Ha Giang border-area permit
The Ministry of Public Security’s current public-service procedure says foreign visitors normally apply through the Vietnamese agency, organization or individual inviting or sponsoring them. A foreigner entering for a private personal matter may apply directly at a provincial immigration office.
- Confirm the exact route. Permit requirements depend on the places and border areas you will enter.
- Prepare valid documents. Your passport details and legal Vietnam entry or residence information must match exactly.
- The inviter or organizer submits the application. The official process uses the appropriate request form, such as NA14 for an inviting organization.
- Allow official processing time. The published maximum is five working days after a complete, valid file is received.
- Pay the official fee. The Ministry of Public Security currently lists the fee as USD 10 per person.
- Carry the required documents. Bring your original passport, valid Vietnam entry or residence documents and the issued permit as instructed.
Public holidays, weekends, incomplete files or a route requiring additional review can affect practical timing. Same-day processing should never be promised.

How Ha Giang Vibes handles the check
Confirm the requirement before sharing passport details
- Send the basic trip information first. We need your nationality, travel date, number of travelers and selected tour or intended route.
- We check the route and explain the current process. Your written quote will state whether a permit is required and whether the official charge is included or separate.
- Share sensitive documents only after the process is confirmed. If passport information is required, use the private channel agreed with the Ha Giang Vibes team.
- Carry the originals during the Loop. Keep your passport, valid Vietnam entry documents and issued permit protected and available for checks.
Ha Giang Vibes does not promise same-day approval. The official public-service procedure allows up to five working days after a complete and valid application is received.
Information to prepare
What your organizer may request
- Full name exactly as shown on the passport.
- Nationality, date of birth and passport number.
- Clear copy of the passport information page.
- Valid visa, e-visa, visa-exemption entry or residence details.
- Expected travel dates and planned border-area route.
- Ha Giang accommodation or sponsoring-organization details where required.
Passport information is sensitive. Send it only through the private channel agreed with your confirmed operator; never post it in public comments, review pages or open travel groups.
Carry and protect your documents
What to bring during the Loop
- Your original valid passport, not only a phone photograph.
- Your valid visa, e-visa, entry stamp or residence document as applicable.
- The border permit in the format provided or required by the issuing authority.
- Separate valid motorcycle documents when Self Riding.
- A waterproof document sleeve and secure digital backup.
Do not leave your passport as a motorcycle-rental deposit. Accommodation providers may need the details for temporary-stay registration, but your original travel document should remain securely controlled.
Know the boundaries
Border area, border belt and restricted zone are not the same
A permitted Loop itinerary does not authorize crossing the national border, walking beyond barriers, approaching military or border facilities, or entering an unapproved side road.
- Stay on the authorized tourist route and follow your guide’s instructions.
- Stop when police or border guards request documents.
- Do not photograph where a prohibition sign is displayed.
- Do not move, climb on or damage border markers.
- Do not fly a drone near border or restricted areas without confirmed permission.
- Use an official international border gate and correct immigration documents if crossing into another country.
Popular Loop stops
Does the permit cover Lung Cu, Dong Van and Ma Pi Leng?
A permit is issued for an approved area, route, period or purpose; it should not be treated as unlimited access to every northern border location. Lung Cu is extremely close to the international boundary, while Dong Van and parts of the surrounding plateau lie within actively monitored border communes.
Your organizer should list the intended itinerary accurately. A permit arranged for a standard Ha Giang Loop should not automatically be assumed to cover a separate Hoang Su Phi route, a Ha Giang-Cao Bang extension or an unplanned border road.

Self Ride warning
A border permit does not solve a licence problem
The permit concerns access to a border area. Self Ride legality depends separately on your motorcycle category, driving licence, recognized international driving permit where applicable, vehicle documents and insurance conditions.
Police checks may examine your passport, permit, visa or residence status, vehicle and driving documents. Choose an Easy Rider when your documents or mountain-road experience are not sufficient.

FAQ
Ha Giang border permit FAQ
Do foreigners need a border permit for the Ha Giang Loop?
Foreign visitors entering designated land-border areas may need a permit. Because standard Loop itineraries commonly enter monitored border communes, have the exact route checked before departure rather than relying only on your Vietnam visa.
How much is the official border permit?
The Ministry of Public Security’s current public-service page lists an official fee of USD 10 per person. Ask whether this is included or separate before paying your tour deposit.
Is the border permit included in the Ha Giang Vibes tour price?
Do not assume it is included automatically. Ha Giang Vibes checks your nationality, date and exact route first, then states in the written quote whether the official permit charge is included or payable separately.
How long does the permit take?
The published maximum is five working days after a complete and valid application is received. Send documents early because weekends, holidays or missing information can cause delays.
Can I get the permit on the same day?
Some travelers report quick local handling, but same-day approval is not the official guaranteed processing time. Do not plan a fixed departure around an unconfirmed promise.
Can a tour company arrange it?
The official procedure normally uses a Vietnamese inviting or sponsoring agency, organization or individual. Confirm exactly who submits it, what information they need and when they will provide proof of approval.
Is the border permit the same as a Vietnam visa?
No. Your visa or visa-exempt entry allows you to enter and stay in Vietnam. The border permit concerns access to an approved land-border area.
Does the permit let me cross into China?
No. Crossing into China requires an official international border gate and all immigration documents required by both countries.
Do I need my original passport on the Loop?
Carry the original valid passport and the documents relevant to your Vietnam stay and border permission. A phone photograph alone may not satisfy an official document check.
Can I visit Lung Cu Flag Tower?
Foreign tourists regularly visit Lung Cu, but it is close to the international border. Confirm your route and permit status, stay on authorized tourist roads and follow local signs.
Does the permit cover Cao Bang too?
Do not assume it does. A Ha Giang-Cao Bang itinerary should be checked as one complete route so the organizer can confirm every required province, area and document.
Do Self Riders need the same permit?
Access rules still apply to independent travelers. Self Riders must also carry separate legal motorcycle and driving documents.
Why do current official pages say Tuyen Quang instead of Ha Giang?
Following the 2025 administrative reorganization, official police and government pages use the expanded Tuyen Quang Province. Ha Giang remains the established travel-region name used for the Loop.
